Environmental Commitment

RoHS and WEEE Compliance

Supporting European Union environmental legislation

EMC is committed to eliminating or reducing the use of environmentally sensitive substances and ensuring the proper disposal of such materials. Our commitment extends to supporting European Union (EU) legislation on 1) the Restriction on the use of certain Hazardous Substances (RoHS) in electronic products and 2) the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive—which sets forth requirements for the collection, treatment, and recycling of electronic waste.

Our commitment to the RoHS and WEEE Directives is demonstrated in the following activities and policies:

RoHS compliance

All products supplied by EMC and initially placed on the EU market after July 1, 2006 meet with the requirements of the RoHS Directive. (Product units placed on the EU market before July 1, 2006-or spare parts for the repair of units placed on the market before that date-are outside the scope of the RoHS Directive.)

EMC implemented a formalized quality-check process to ensure our ongoing RoHS compliance. We maintain records and RoHS Compliance Declarations from all our suppliers of materials and parts that are used in the assembly and manufacture of EMC products.

Products purchased with the intention of subsequent integration into another product of the customer’s creation—which is also aimed at the EU market-must be reviewed with EMC on a case-by-case basis to determine RoHS requirements and applicable exemptions.

China-RoHS compliance

The following information relates only to Phase 1 of the implementation of the China-RoHS regulations, which involves product labeling and content information in relation to certain hazardous substances (HS) or toxic substances (TS) in Electronic Information Products (EIP). (Phase 2 of the implementation is expected to apply only to products listed in an EIP catalogue, but the extent to which Phase 2 will apply to EMC products is not known at this writing.)

All EMC products manufactured on or after March 1, 2007 and supplied to customers comply with the requirements stipulated per the China-RoHS EIP regulations. According to official statements from the Ministry of Information Industry (MII), the China-RoHS regulations do not apply to products that had been manufactured prior to March 1, 2007.

EMC products or spare parts purchased with the intention of subsequent integration into another product of a customer’s creation, or for separate distribution also aimed at the China market, must be reviewed with EMC on a case-by-case basis to ensure that such products/sales remain in compliance with the EIP criteria.

Exceeding our compliance obligations, EMC also established a proactive monitoring program regarding any new RoHS—related laws on a worldwide basis. Our goal is to ensure our products’ continued compliance with evolving international requirements.

Supporting European Union environmental legislation

EMC provides an easy way to recycle all our products subject to European Directive 2002/96/EC for WEEE. These products are clearly marked with the WEEE logo (crossed-out wheelie bin). In addition, EMC (or, as appropriate, its distributors) will be registered as a WEEE Producer in all EU countries.

Our company has established a product recycling process supporting all EU customer locations. EU customers may contact their EMC service/sales representative or EMC distributor to arrange for the collection/take-back of EMC products for proper recycling.

EMC Channel Partners and/or EMC-authorized WEEE treatment vendors may obtain more specific information via their assigned EMC PowerLink connection.
